We thought Ranger was an apt name for the firstborn puppy (my husband is and ex-Marine and explained that the Rangers were the "first ones in"). Ranger arrived at 8:30 a.m. He breathed quickly and was strong and alert. Ranger weighed 13 oz at birth. Now at one month of age, he is up to 53 oz. His color is still changing, but at this point he looks light apricot with nice black pigment.

Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test Results

Ranger's scores (five 3's, three 4's, one 5 and one 2) indicate an affectionate puppy who is moderately outgoing. He approached our strange tester readily, but lowered his tail as he cautiously followed her. He did not struggle at all when held on his back but did struggle a bit when held in the air. Ranger showed the highest interest in retrieving of all of our puppies, retrieving the object and enthusiastically bringing it back to our tester repeatedly. This indicates that Ranger would enjoy and active family who would like to throw a ball for him, play frisbee, take him hunting or maybe get involved in agility. He showed little touch sensitivity, and calm acceptance and curiousity about  strange sights and sounds. Ranger was the only puppy to wag his tail at the open umbrella but did not move toward it. Ranger should be an easy to train dog. He wants to please and is affectionate and a little bit on the sensitive side, so little discipline should be needed.

Puppy Puzzle Conformation results

Ranger measured the smallest in the litter (Brumby was excluded) today measuring 12 inches at the shoulder and in length. No worries though as Standard Poodles only have to be 15 inches at the shoulder which Ranger will achieve in no time. Ranger seems a little more fine boned than some of his heavier boned litter mates. His conformation was near perfect. He only earned one 4- for eyes not quite oblique enough. Other than that, he showed perfect show/breeding quality. Ranger has pure black pigment which sets off his apricot coloring. He has lots of spark and energy, making him a good show prospect.
